Wanda Crowell Hughes, a devoted community member and beloved family figure, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025, at Ridgewood Terrace in Madisonville, Kentucky, after a short illness. She was born on August 4, 1946, in Providence, Kentucky, and throughout her life, she enriched the lives of those around her with her unwavering faith and commitment to service.
Wanda had a diverse career that included working in several banks and notably at the Food Giant in Dawson Springs. Her professional journey was complemented by her commitment to serving others on foreign mission fields from 1992 to 2016, where she dedicated herself to building churches and sharing God's Word, illustrating her deep faith and compassion for people in need.
An active member of the First Baptist Church in Dawson Springs, Wanda's spiritual life was the cornerstone of her existence. Her commitment extended into the community, where she took on leadership roles as a board member and past president of the Dawson Springs Museum and Arts Center. She also served on the boards of various local organizations, including the Darby House, Mule and Draft Horse Days, Rosedale Cemetery, and Dawson Springs Code Enforcement. She enjoyed being a member of the Pennyrile Homemakers Club, the Y.W. Club, and the Greenville Lions Club, demonstrating her passion for uplifting her community and making a lasting impact. Wanda also served on the Christmas decorating committees for the City of Dawson Springs and the Pennyrile State Park.
Wanda cherished her family, leaving behind three sons: Benny Boyd Hughes, Jr., Brent Hughes and his wife, Melanie, and Brice Hughes and his wife, Heather. She was a devoted grandmother to five grandchildren: Amber Desirae (Justin) Epley, Connor Hughes, Bradley Byron Hughes, Benjamin Hughes, and Ally Hughes, who brought her immense joy and pride.
She is survived by her three sisters, Joyce (Donald) Barnhill, Dixie McWorthy, and Sue (Laverne) Lofton. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Crowell and Dixie Evelyn Brown Crowell; her beloved husband of 55 years, Benny Boyd Hughes, Sr.; three sisters, Ruby Harrison, Prue Malone, and Mary Lou Winebarger; and a brother, J.M. Crowell.
Visitation for Wanda Crowell Hughes will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church located at 960 Industrial Park Road in Dawson Springs, Kentucky. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM, with Bro. Steve Rutherford, Rev. Mike Jicka and Bro. Tommy Gunn officiating. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery in Dawson Springs, KY. Pallbearers will be: Brent Hughes, Connor Hughes, Benjamin Hughes, Brice Hughes, Byron Hughes and Mark McGregor.
