Richard L. “Dick” Massamore of Dawson Springs, KY, passed away at 5:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Massamore was born March 27, 1924 in Christian County, Ky. He was a member of First Christian Church in Dawson Springs, KY where he served as deacon, elder, trustee and chairman of the church board.
Mr. Massamore was a 1942 graduate of Dawson Springs High School and was also a graduate of Memphis State College (now University of Memphis.) For three years he attended The Southern Law School (now University of Memphis.) During World War II he served his country in the United States Army as a medic and surgical technician in the European Theatre. He also served briefly in the Navy and the Naval Reserve.
He was the developer and owner of Massamore Tax Service for 50 years and worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in Memphis, TN and in Dawson Springs, KY.
Mr. Massamore was a Kentucky Colonel and served his community in numerous ways. He served as the Civil Defense Director for Dawson Springs; was a 50 plus year member of the Rotary Club where he served as past president, board member and Paul Harris Fellow. He was an original organizer of the Dawson Springs Community Center and also served as a chairman and director for the annual Dawson Springs BBQ. He was a leader for the Dawson Springs Scouting Troop #14 and was also a trustee for Macedonia Cemetery and a lifetime member of the local VFW and American Legion.
Mr. Massamore is survived by his wife of 65 years ~ Jean Simons Massamore of Dawson Springs, KY; Two daughters ~ Jean Ann Appleby of Dawson Springs, KY & Jane M. Stout of Franklin, IN; One Son & Daughter-in-law ~ David & Ginger Massamore of Madisonville, KY; Seven grandchildren ~ Lee Anne (Roy) Lowrance, Jim Farmer, Lori (Shane) Banister, Sarah (Michael) Thomas, Ben (Amanda) Stout, Scott (Jen) Massamore & Clay Massamore; Thirteen Great-Grandchildren ~ Devan Oliver, Grant, Noah & Isabella Grace Lowrance, Brycen Banister, Andrew & Kaitlyn Thomas, Isaac & Brooklyn Logston, Stephen & Randy Stout, Isabella Adams & Kamryn Massamore.
Preceding Mr. Massamore in death were his parents ~ James R & Elza Capps Massamore.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 5-8:00 P.M. and Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 9:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. at Beshear Funeral Home in Dawson Springs, KY. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Larry Davidson & Mrs. Sherry Mestan Bechantin on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Beshear Funeral Home. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery in Christian County, KY
Active pallbearers will be Scott Massamore, Devan Oliver, Noah Lowrance, Ben Stout, Grant Lowrance , Michael Thomas, Shane Banister & Roy Lowrance. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Herb Chaney, Jim Farmer, Clay Massamore & Brycen Banister.
