James Charles “J.C.” Purdy, age 77, of Dawson Springs, KY, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 9, 201. He was born in Hopkins County on December 20, 1933 to the late Les John & Mae Bell Mitchell Purdy. He attended Charleston High School to the ninth grade. He served in the US Army two years, from 1956 to 1958. He retired in 1991 from the Department of Corrections after working 30 years at the Kentucky State Penitentiary.
He was delegated a Kentucky Colonel and was an active, life-long member of Charleston First Missionary Baptist church where he supported its ministries and its service to the Lord. He was an area history buff and an avid collector of old photographs. In his younger years he was a shred knife trader. He enjoyed family reunions and was a supporter of the Charleston Alumni Association. He was, most of all, a friend to all.
Mr. Purdy is survived by his wife of 56 years ~ Thelma Morse Purdy of Dawson Springs, KY; a daughter & son-in-law ~ Janet Marie & David Winstead of Dawson Springs, KY; a son & daughter-in-law James Ray & Margaret Purdy of Dawson Springs, KY; two sisters ~ Rosie Dockery & Jeanie Griffin both of Dawson Springs, KY; one brother ~ Norman Purdy of Madisonville, KY; three grandchildren ~ Johnathan Winstead & wife Nichole, Chele Purdy & Joe Winstead; two aunts ~ Mildred Purdy & Irene Volker; along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding Mr. Purdy in death were his parents ~ Les John Purdy & Mae Bell Mitchell.
Homegoing Services will be held at Beshear Funeral Home in Dawson Springs, KY on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 2:30 P.M. with Dr. Calvin Bryant, Pastor of Charleston First Missionary Baptist and the Rev. Donnie Howton officiating. Visitation will be Monday, December 12, 2011 from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and from 9:00 A.M. until the service time on Tuesday. Burial will follow in Dunn Cemetery with full military rites.
Active pallbearers will be Joel Dunlap, Greg Rickard, Joe Winstead, Andrew Dockery, Johnathan Winstead & Joe Dunbar. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Bro. I.N. Workman, Bro. Gene Workman, J.C. Stewart, Owen Morse, Tom Purdy & David Sewell, J.W. Hendrix & Billy Mitchell.
